# How to Switch from Later to DunSocial Without Losing Your Content Calendar > Switch from Later to DunSocial: export your upcoming Later posts by hand (Later has no MCP), recreate them via DunSocial MCP, test one prompt, then check the calendar. - Published: 2026-09-24 - Last updated: 2026-09-24 - Author: Sanju (Founder & CEO @ DunSocial) - Topics: later, migration --- Later does not publish an MCP server, so this move is not the agent-to-agent handoff [switching from Buffer](/blog/switch-from-buffer-to-dunsocial) or [Hootsuite](/blog/switch-from-hootsuite-to-dunsocial) is. You export your upcoming Later queue by hand into a short Markdown list, connect DunSocial MCP, and let the assistant recreate drafts from that list: reviewable, human-confirmed, with a next-day calendar check before you cancel Later. This guide is for solo founders and small teams who picked Later for its visual grid planner and have since hit the wall on its metered AI: Later's Help Center documents that Caption Writer and Ideas draw from **one shared monthly credit pool**. Starter gets **5 credits/month**, and once they're gone you either buy add-on credits (**$5/month per 100 credits**) or upgrade plans ([Later Help Center](https://help.later.com/hc/en-us/articles/15701256720407-Managing-Later-Plan-Add-ons-Credits)). If you want AI writing that is not gated behind a credit meter, start a [14-day free trial](https://app.dunsocial.com/login) and follow the steps below. ## Why this migration looks different from Buffer/Hootsuite Buffer ships an official MCP server and Hootsuite ships Perch MCP, so both of those guides dump the old queue with the vendor's own MCP tools. Later has no MCP server that we could find on its site, and DunSocial's own vetted comparison notes this directly (["We found none on their site."](/compare/dunsocial-vs-later)). That means: - **No agent-to-agent dump from Later.** You (or your assistant, working from what you paste in) write the upcoming queue into Markdown by hand, using Later's calendar or grid view as the source. - **DunSocial MCP still does the recreate side.** Once that Markdown exists, the same draft-first, human-confirmed recreate flow from the Buffer/Hootsuite guides applies unchanged. - **This is a smaller migration by design.** Don't try to hand-transcribe months of a Later Social Set. Pull the next 1-2 weeks of scheduled posts, enough to prove the cutover works, and recreate the rest as you plan new content in DunSocial. ## Fit check before you move (30 seconds) This cutover is for founders whose live Later queue sits on networks DunSocial covers: **Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Threads, and YouTube Shorts** are generally available on DunSocial; TikTok is limited beta on both, and Facebook Pages is DunSocial's own limited beta (not the full Facebook coverage Later has). DunSocial also covers **X, Bluesky, Reddit, Discord, and Slack**, none of which Later lists. A human confirms before publish. **Price while you overlap:** USD 20/mo or USD 192/yr, 14-day free trial, 1 seat in the base plan, extra seats at $8/mo. Full detail on [pricing](/pricing). Later's own Starter plan runs **$18.75/mo billed yearly** (8 profiles, 1 user, no free tier, 14-day trial). See [DunSocial vs Later](/compare/dunsocial-vs-later) for the maintained comparison. **MCP:** 53 tools, included. Endpoint: `https://api.dunsocial.com/api/mcp`. **Stay on Later if visual planning is the job.** Later's grid preview and feed planning genuinely beat what DunSocial offers, and Later runs a real influencer-marketing business alongside scheduling. DunSocial has none of that. Later also has full (not beta) Facebook support plus Snapchat, neither of which DunSocial matches (DunSocial's Facebook Pages coverage is its own limited beta, not full Facebook; Snapchat isn't supported at all). Later also has link-in-bio, which DunSocial doesn't. If that's the bulk of your workflow, this guide isn't for you. See [Later alternatives](/alternatives/later) for the wider picture instead. ## Setup (once) ### Pull your Later queue into Markdown Open Later's calendar or Social Set grid for the profiles you're moving. For each scheduled post over the next 1-2 weeks, write one Markdown file in `./later-export/` with: platform, scheduled time (ISO), caption/body text, and a note on media ("attached" or "needs re-upload"; Later posts are usually image/video-led, so expect most rows to say the latter until you re-upload into DunSocial). Do this manually; there's no MCP or API shortcut on Later's side to automate it. Don't touch anything in Later while you do this. You're only reading the queue, not editing it yet. ### Start DunSocial and connect accounts [Log in or start the trial](https://app.dunsocial.com/login), then connect the overlapping networks in the DunSocial app first. MCP needs those accounts in place before it can create drafts against the right channels. ### Connect DunSocial MCP In DunSocial, open Settings → MCP and add `https://api.dunsocial.com/api/mcp` in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or another MCP client. Approve the workspace scopes your assistant needs. Posts created through MCP are tagged with source "MCP" in the app, which makes the migration trail easy to audit. Details and tool coverage are on the [MCP page](/mcp). Prefer the terminal? The same workspace also works with the [DunSocial CLI](/cli). ### Save brand voice Before you recreate anything, set AI Memory and a Voice Preset. The test prompt below should prove voice and scheduling, not just that a draft appeared, and unlike Later's Caption Writer, generating with it doesn't spend a metered credit. ## Migration checklist Work the list in order. The test step and the next-day check are what keep you from double-posts and gaps. ### 1. Finish the Later export (human step) Make sure every post you want moved for the test window has its own Markdown file in `./later-export/`: platform, ISO time, body text, media note. This is the one step here that isn't agent-assisted end-to-end, but it's worth the manual pass because it's also your last honest look at what's actually still scheduled. ### 2. Review the Markdown (human gate) Skim every file. Keep, drop, or rewrite. Prioritize posts on networks DunSocial covers (Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube Shorts GA; TikTok and Facebook Pages limited beta; plus X, Bluesky, Reddit, Discord, and Slack, which Later doesn't have at all). Leave Later-only items (Stories-heavy Social Sets, link-in-bio content, plain Facebook or Snapchat posts) on Later if you still want them there. Note which posts need media re-uploaded into DunSocial's media library. ### 3. Test the prompt (before the rest) Paste the **test migrate one or two posts** prompt below. It should create drafts for the first two posts only, match platform and time as closely as DunSocial supports, and tell you exactly what to open in the app. Do not publish yet. Open DunSocial, review those drafts, and confirm the schedule looks right. If the test fails, fix voice, media, or platform mapping before you scale. ### 4. Recreate the rest via DunSocial MCP When the test looks good, paste the **migrate the rest after test passes** prompt. Prefer draft plus schedule over publish-now. Attach media through DunSocial's media flow, since most Later posts will need a fresh upload since captions rarely travel with an image URL you can just paste. Keep human confirmation on. Ask the assistant for a short summary of what it created and what still needs your media. ### 5. Pick a handover date and avoid doubles Choose a cutover day. New work lands in DunSocial from that point. Cancel the matching Later items that should not fire. A short overlap is fine if you're deliberate about which calendar owns each post. ### 6. Check the next day The morning after: open the DunSocial calendar (and Later if it's still live). Confirm yesterday's test or early cutover posts went out once, previews matched, and nothing failed silently. Only then deepen the cutover. ### 7. Cancel Later last After the next-day check passes and the DunSocial calendar matches your intent, cancel Later, or downgrade rather than cancel if you still want its grid planner or link-in-bio for the posts that stay there. Export any Later analytics you still want to keep first; DunSocial's own reporting stops at a best-time-to-post heatmap, not a full analytics history. ## Copy-paste prompts Use these as written once your `./later-export/` Markdown files exist. Adjust the folder name if you need to, but keep the "drafts first / no publish without confirmation" constraints. ### Test migrate one or two posts ### Migrate the rest after test passes ## Common mistakes - **Trying to bulk-export Later like it has an MCP or CSV dump.** It doesn't (as far as we could find), so pull the next 1-2 weeks by hand instead of stalling the whole migration on automating something that isn't there. - **Assuming captions carry their media along.** Most Later posts are image/video-led; plan to re-upload into DunSocial rather than expecting a URL to just work. - **Publishing from MCP without human confirm.** Keep confirm on until you trust the mapping. - **Leaving the same post scheduled in Later and DunSocial.** That's how you get doubles. - **Cancelling Later before the next-day check**, or before exporting analytics you still want. ## After the switch Once the calendar is yours again, DunSocial is set up for how founders already work: Daily Ideas for the next posts, AI Memory and Voice Presets so drafts stay on-brand without spending a credit per caption, and MCP so you can draft from Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor without bouncing into five tabs. See [why AI posts sound generic](/blog/stop-ai-posts-sounding-generic) for why memory beats a per-caption prompt. If you haven't started yet, open the [trial](https://app.dunsocial.com/login), connect your overlapping accounts, and pull the first week of your Later queue into Markdown before you run the prompts above. No MCP or bulk-import path exists on Later's side as far as we could confirm, so you pull the upcoming queue into Markdown by hand. Then DunSocial MCP takes over for the recreate side, the same reviewable draft-first flow the Buffer and Hootsuite guides use. ### Why is this migration smaller in scope than the Buffer/Hootsuite ones? Those guides assume a full agent-assisted dump because Buffer and Hootsuite both ship MCP servers. Later doesn't, so this guide is scoped to a manageable manual export (the next 1-2 weeks of your queue) rather than asking you to hand-transcribe months of a Social Set. ### Will I lose Later's grid preview or link-in-bio? Yes, DunSocial doesn't have either. If visual feed planning or link-in-bio is central to how you work, keep Later for that and use DunSocial for the platforms it covers that Later doesn't: X, Bluesky, Reddit, Discord, and Slack. ### Does DunSocial's AI writing use credits like Later's? No. AI writing is included on the plan, not metered from a shared credit pool the way Later's Caption Writer and Ideas are. See [DunSocial vs Later](/compare/dunsocial-vs-later). ### When do I cancel Later? After the test prompt looks right and the next-day calendar check passes. Cancel matching Later items on the handover date so nothing double-posts, and export any analytics you want to keep first. ## Sources - Later AI credit pooling and add-on pricing: [Later Help Center: Managing Later Plan Add-ons, Credits](https://help.later.com/hc/en-us/articles/15701256720407-Managing-Later-Plan-Add-ons-Credits) - Later pricing and platform list: [later.com/pricing](https://later.com/pricing/), verified against `apps/landing/src/lib/content/competitors.ts` - DunSocial vs Later comparison: [/compare/dunsocial-vs-later](/compare/dunsocial-vs-later) Retrieved 24 September 2026. --- ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/blog/switch-from-later-to-dunsocial.
