# How the Threads algorithm works in 2026 > Threads ranks posts by conversation, not likes: replies, topic clarity & early engagement drive reach. Here is what that means for how you post. - Published: 2026-09-30 - Last updated: 2026-09-30 - Author: Sanju (Founder & CEO @ DunSocial) - Topics: threads, tips --- The Threads algorithm ranks posts by how much real conversation they start, not by how many likes they collect. Replies, a clear topic, & how quickly people respond after you post decide how far a post travels. Meta does not publish a formula with fixed weights, so treat every number you read as a pattern, not a rule. What Meta has said publicly is enough to build a posting routine around. ## Threads is a personalized feed, not a chronological one The For You feed is built around each reader's interests & the conversations they take part in. Posts from accounts a reader does not follow can appear too, which is why a small account can occasionally land a post that reaches far beyond its follower count. Meta says the ranking system scores each candidate post against a reader's past behavior, then orders posts by how much value it predicts. Because that value is a learned prediction, the behavior shifts every few months. ## Replies matter more than likes Meta's creator education reported that replies accounted for almost half of views on Threads in its analysis, & that posts driving conversations were more likely to be recommended. A like is one tap. A reply takes effort, so the ranking treats it as a stronger signal. Low-effort bait ("comment YES if you agree") does not help, & Instagram head Adam Mosseri has said Meta is working to control engagement bait. Write a post that leaves something to answer: one clear, open question, or a specific opinion a reader can agree or disagree with. ## Tag one accurate topic Meta said posts with a tagged topic generally received more views than posts without one in its own data. Use a topic only when it names the real conversation. A trending topic attached to an unrelated announcement does not help. The June 2026 Your Algo update lets eligible readers ask for more or less of specific topics for one, three, or seven days. These are reader controls, not creator settings, but they reward the same habit: be clear about what your account posts about. ## The first hour is when you should be around Threads tests a post with a small group before widening it. Several 2026 guides put that window at roughly the first 30 to 60 minutes, so replying to early comments while the post is still being tested is the habit worth building. Treat that window as a working assumption, not a guarantee. Meta has not published a fixed length. ## Write for Threads, don't paste from Instagram or X Cross-posts are not directly penalized, but they usually underperform. An Instagram caption written for an image feed arrives in a text-first feed, & a punchy X take often reads as cold on Threads. Rewrite the idea for Threads: lead with the hook, keep it short, & end where a reader can respond. A Threads post is capped at 500 characters, so a long caption gets cut anyway. ## How often to post Most 2026 playbooks land on roughly 2 to 5 posts a week, plus real replies on other people's posts most days. More posts only help if each one keeps clearing the engagement bar. Three good posts a week beat fourteen forgettable ones. That rhythm is exactly what a scheduler is for. Batch the posts once, then spend your time in the replies instead of at the composer. ## Schedule Threads posts around your reply time DunSocial [schedules directly to Threads](/blog/best-social-media-scheduler-for-threads) from the same calendar as your other accounts. Pick slots when you can be online for the first hour, & DunSocial's best-time-to-post heatmap, built from your account's own activity, shows when your audience is around. AI Memory & Voice Presets keep every draft specific to your brand, & every AI-assisted draft waits for you to confirm before anything goes out. ## FAQ ### Does the Threads algorithm favor replies over likes? Yes. Meta's own creator education says replies accounted for almost half of views in its analysis, & posts that start conversations were more likely to be recommended. Write posts that invite a real answer, not a reaction. ### How often should I post on Threads? Roughly 2 to 5 times a week, plus replies on other people's posts. More is fine only if each post still earns conversation. Consistency matters more than volume. ### Does scheduling a Threads post hurt reach? No. Etienne Blanc, product marketing manager for Threads at Meta, has confirmed that posts shared through third-party apps are treated the same as native ones. See [does scheduling posts hurt your reach](/blog/does-scheduling-posts-hurt-your-reach). What matters is being around to reply after the post goes live, so schedule for times you can be online. ### Do hashtags work on Threads? Threads uses one topic tag per post. Meta said tagged posts generally got more views than untagged ones, as long as the topic accurately names the conversation. ### Can I review a Threads post before it goes live? Yes. Every AI-assisted draft in DunSocial waits for your confirmation before it schedules or publishes. ## Sources - [Threads Algorithm in 2026: What Meta Actually Says (DOHOO)](https://blog.dohoo.ai/blog/threads-algorithm/): replies share of views, topic tags, Dear Algo & Your Algo timeline - [Does Threads Have an Algorithm?
