# Why does my Threads post fail with more than 5 links? > Threads rejects any post with more than 5 unique links. Here is how Threads counts them, the error you will see, & how to fix a post before you schedule it. - Published: 2026-10-11 - Last updated: 2026-10-11 - Author: Sanju (Founder & CEO @ DunSocial) - Topics: threads, tips --- A Threads post fails when it contains more than 5 links. Since December 22, 2025, Threads rejects those posts when they are created, & the fix is to cut the post down to 5 unique links or fewer. The limit applies to every tool that publishes to Threads through its API. Here is how the count works & how to avoid the failure. ## How Threads counts links Meta's [Threads developer documentation](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/threads/posts) sets out the counting rules: - **Every unique URL in the text counts.** Five different links is the maximum. - **A link attachment counts too.** If the attachment is a URL that does not appear in the text, it adds one more link. - **The same URL is counted once.** If the attachment matches a URL already in the text, it is not counted twice. ## What the error looks like When a post goes over, the publish step fails with the error code `THREADS_API__LINK_LIMIT_EXCEEDED`. The post never reaches your profile. For a scheduled post, that means you find out at publish time unless you catch it first. If a Threads post did not appear, a link count over 5 is worth checking next to the usual causes in [why did my scheduled social media post fail](/blog/why-did-my-scheduled-social-post-fail). ## How to fix a post with too many links 1. **Count the unique URLs** in the text, plus any link attachment that is different. 2. **Keep the 5 that matter.** Move the rest into the destination page, or a single link to a page that lists them. 3. **Split a roundup into separate posts.** Put 3 to 4 links in each post & schedule them on different days, so no single post goes over. 4. **Reschedule the post** once the count is 5 or fewer. A roundup of 8 resources is a good example. Instead of pasting all 8 links into one post, link your own page that lists them & keep one or two in the post itself. ## Keep Threads links under the limit with DunSocial DunSocial schedules Threads posts from the same calendar as X, LinkedIn, Instagram, Bluesky, Reddit, Pinterest, YouTube Shorts, Discord, & Slack, with TikTok & Facebook Pages in limited beta. - **One calendar for Threads.** Write each post as a draft, count its links, & schedule it next to your other networks. - **Webhooks for failures.** The `post.publish_failed` webhook tells your own URL the moment a publish attempt fails, so you do not find out from an empty profile. See [DunSocial webhooks](/blog/dunsocial-webhooks-get-notified-when-a-post-publishes-or-fails). Threads counts every different URL in the text, plus a link attachment if it is a different URL from those in the text. ### Does the same link twice count as two? No. A repeated URL is counted once, & a link attachment that matches a URL in the text is counted once too. Different URLs each count. ### Does the limit apply to scheduled posts? Yes. It applies to the publish step, so a scheduled post with more than 5 links fails when it is due to go out, not when you schedule it. ### Can I split the links across several posts? Yes. The limit is per post, so several posts can carry more links in total. Keep each post at 5 or fewer & schedule them as separate posts. ## Sources - [Threads Posts, Meta for Developers](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/threads/posts) - [Threads Changelog, Meta for Developers](https://developers.facebook.com/documentation/threads/changelog) --- ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/blog/threads-post-failed-too-many-links.
