# What is an AI social media manager? > An AI social media manager plans, writes, schedules and publishes posts on your behalf. Here is what that actually means, what it cannot do, and how to judge one. - Published: 2026-07-22 - Last updated: 2026-09-18 - Author: DunSocial - Topics: ai, explainer --- An AI social media manager plans, writes, schedules and publishes your posts, using a language model that's been given lasting context about your brand. A scheduler only does the last two jobs. A generic AI writing assistant does the writing but can't touch your accounts and forgets what you published last week. The label gets stuck on three different things, so separate them first. ## The three things people mean **A scheduler with an AI button.** A queue-and-publish tool with a text generator bolted onto the composer. No memory between sessions, no knowledge of your positioning, no idea what your last thirty posts said. Most common form, because it's the cheapest to build. **A generic AI writing tool.** A chat window that produces post-shaped text. Writes well, knows nothing about you, so every session starts with you re-explaining who you are. It can't publish either. **An AI-first social tool.** The model is the interface, not a feature inside one. Searchable memory of your brand, a defined voice, sight of what's already scheduled, and it publishes. The question that separates it from the other two: does the AI have state? You can't see that on a pricing page. ## The test: does it remember? Ask one question. *If I explain my positioning today, will it still know it next month, in a different post, without me repeating myself?* If not, you bought a text generator. Everything starts from zero, which is why AI social content sounds interchangeable. Nobody told the model anything specific enough to write about. Memory fixes that. Store brand facts, tone, preferred and forbidden phrasings and past decisions as retrievable entries, then pull the relevant ones into each post. A post about pricing should recall what you've said about pricing, with no tagging from you. ## What it actually does Ordered by how much time each part saves. 1. **Reformatting.** One idea becomes a 280-character X post, a 3,000-character LinkedIn post, an Instagram caption and a Reddit self post with the right subreddit and flair. The biggest time sink in multi-platform publishing, and the part AI gets right most reliably. 2. **Drafting from fragments.** A voice note, a URL or one line of intent becomes a full draft. The machine doesn't write better than you. It just gets you past the blank box, which is where most posts die. 3. **Ideation.** On-brand ideas from what it already knows, so the daily question is "is this one good" instead of "what should I post". 4. **Scheduling.** Times from your own engagement data, not a generic industry chart. 5. **Publishing.** Native posting to each platform API, respecting each one's format rules. ## What it does not do Be suspicious of any tool that's vague about these. **It doesn't replace judgement.** A model has no idea a jokey post is badly timed because of something that happened in your industry this morning. Keep a human approval step. **It doesn't know what you haven't told it.** Output quality is capped by what you stored. **It usually doesn't manage the inbox.** Publishing and community management are different products. Plenty of tools do one and imply the other. **It can't rescue a bad strategy.** Mediocre content, faster, is not an outcome. AI removes the friction that stops good posts getting written. It doesn't supply the thing worth saying. ## How to evaluate one 1. **Does the AI have persistent, searchable memory of your brand?** If not, it's a text generator. 2. **Can you define a voice once and have it applied everywhere?** That's the difference between sounding like you and sounding like a model. 3. **Does one draft become each platform's native format?** Ask about threads, carousels, Reels and Reddit flair. Copying identical text everywhere is not multi-platform support. 4. **Can you see exactly what will publish before it goes out?** An exact preview, not an approximation. 5. **Can an AI agent drive it?** With an MCP server or a real API on the base plan, you can run it from Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or a script. If automation sits behind an enterprise tier, the AI positioning is marketing. ## Where DunSocial sits DunSocial is the third kind. The AI is the interface, not an add-on. - **AI Memory** stores brand facts, tone, likes and dislikes with semantic search, organised into collections, and feeds the relevant entries into every post. - **AI Voice Presets** are reusable brand-voice personas, so voice is stored instead of re-prompted. - **Per-platform formatting** turns one draft into the native format of X (threads up to 25 posts), LinkedIn profiles and Company Pages, Instagram feed images, carousels and Reels, Threads, Bluesky, Reddit with subreddit and flair, Pinterest, YouTube Shorts, Discord and Slack, plus TikTok in limited beta. - **A hosted MCP server** with 53 tools, included, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP client can draft, schedule and publish. Those posts get tagged with an MCP source. - **Human approval** before anything goes live. Scheduled posts then publish automatically. What it doesn't do: no image generation, no social inbox, no analytics beyond a posting-time heatmap. One plan, $20 per month or $192 per year, everything included, unlimited scheduled posts. One seat, extra seats $8 per month each ($77 per year). 14-day free trial. --- ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/blog/what-is-an-ai-social-media-manager.
