# How to post to Reddit from the command line > Reddit needs --meta with a subreddit, a kind & a title, plus a flair id when the subreddit requires one. Look up flairs with dun reddit flairs, validate, then publish with --wait to get the real permalink. Prefer flairId alone. Updated: 2026-10-05. ## Why Reddit is different Every Reddit post goes to a specific subreddit with its own rules. Many require a flair, & the CLI needs to know the subreddit, the post type & a title before it can send anything. That information goes in `--meta` as JSON, which is why Reddit has its own walkthrough. ## The --meta fields | Field | Required | Notes | |-------|----------|-------| | `subreddit` | yes | Without the `r/` | | `kind` | yes | `self`, `link`, `image` or `video` | | `title` | yes | The post title | | `flairId` | when the subreddit requires flair | From `dun reddit flairs` | | `url` | for `link` posts | The link to share | | `flairText` | no | Only if that flair allows editable text | Prefer `flairId` alone. Sending `flairText` without a `flairId` always fails. ## Step 1: upload media if you have any ```bash dun media upload ./demo.mp4 --json ``` Copy the asset id from the output. Text & link posts skip this step. ## Step 2: find the flair id ```bash dun reddit flairs tamilyapping --json ``` Use the flair's id, not just its label text. You can also run `dun reddit requirements SUBREDDIT --json` to see what the subreddit demands. DunSocial's CLI lists the flairs for you, so you don't have to copy ids from Reddit's own site. ## Step 3: validate against live rules ```bash dun posts validate \ --accounts REDDIT_ACCOUNT_ID \ --media ASSET_ID \ --meta '{"reddit":{"subreddit":"tamilyapping","kind":"video","title":"Your title","flairId":"FLAIR_ID"}}' \ --json ``` This runs the API checks first, then checks the live subreddit rules. It's the cheapest way to find out a post would be rejected. DunSocial runs the Reddit-specific check after its own, which is why a post can pass the API checks & still be flagged here. ## Step 4: publish & wait for the permalink ```bash dun posts publish \ --accounts REDDIT_ACCOUNT_ID \ --media ASSET_ID \ --meta '{"reddit":{"subreddit":"tamilyapping","kind":"video","title":"Your title","flairId":"FLAIR_ID"}}' \ --wait \ --json ``` With `--wait`, the CLI returns the real result, including the Reddit permalink, instead of just a queued status. Use `dun posts schedule` with `--in` or `--at` to send it later. DunSocial returns the permalink when --wait finishes, so a script can log or share it. ## A note on etiquette A working command doesn't mean the post is welcome. Read the subreddit's rules about self-promotion before posting a brand's content. DunSocial's validation can confirm that a post meets a subreddit's technical requirements. It can't tell you whether the community will like it. ## Related guides - [Reddit marketing without breaking the rules](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-platform-guides/reddit-marketing-without-breaking-the-rules.md) - [How to validate a post before publishing with the DunSocial CLI](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/dunsocial-cli-guides/how-to-validate-a-post-before-publishing-with-the-dunsocial-cli.md) - [How to attach images & videos to a post from the DunSocial CLI](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/dunsocial-cli-guides/how-to-attach-images-and-videos-to-a-post-from-the-dunsocial-cli.md) - [How to find the right social account id in the DunSocial CLI](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/dunsocial-cli-guides/how-to-find-the-right-social-account-id-in-the-dunsocial-cli.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/dunsocial-cli-guides/how-to-post-to-reddit-from-the-command-line.
