# What is employee advocacy on social media? > Employee advocacy is employees sharing or talking about their employer from their own accounts, voluntarily. It works because people trust people more than logos, & it doesn't need special software to start. Updated: 2026-10-05. ## What employee advocacy means Employee advocacy is employees sharing, commenting on or writing about their employer from their own social accounts. A designer posts about a project they shipped. A salesperson reshares a customer story. An engineer explains how a feature was built. The key word is voluntary. Once posting becomes a requirement, it stops being advocacy & starts being unpaid marketing, which people notice & resent. ## Why it tends to work Followers treat a person's post differently from a logo's post. A colleague describing real work reads as a first-hand account. A company page announcing the same thing reads as an announcement. Personal networks also reach people a brand page doesn't. Ten employees with a few hundred connections each cover a lot of ground the company account never touched. ## What it is not - A script every employee must paste on the same day - A way to turn staff into a distribution channel - A replacement for the company's own accounts - A fix for a weak product or unclear message When every post is word-for-word identical, followers spot it in seconds. Authentic posts carry different angles, because people notice different things about the same work. ## What a small team actually needs A small team doesn't need an advocacy platform. It needs three plain things: a place to find shareable content, a clear & short guideline on what's fine to post, & a way to make posting easy for people who are already willing. Everything else, leaderboards, points, rewards, is optional & often counterproductive at small scale. DunSocial covers the third need, making posting easy, & leaves the first two as a shared document & a short guideline. ## Where a scheduler helps Posting from personal accounts is mostly a time problem. People mean to share something & forget. A scheduler lets a willing employee draft a post when they have a minute & have it go out at a sensible time. DunSocial can connect personal accounts in a workspace, so a founder or team member can schedule posts alongside the company's own, with drafts staying visible on the calendar. ## What DunSocial doesn't do DunSocial isn't an employee advocacy platform. It has no content-sharing portal, no leaderboard & no way to push posts to other people's accounts without their involvement. That's deliberate for a small team: each person connects their own account & decides what to post, which keeps the advocacy voluntary & the posts genuinely theirs. ## Starting without a program Pick two or three willing people. Give them a short list of what's worth sharing & let them post in their own words. Look at what lands after a month before widening it. A program built on a few people who enjoy posting beats a company-wide push that people dodge. DunSocial's workspace calendar makes it simple to start small & see how a few people's posts sit alongside the company's own. ## Related guides - [Personal account vs company page: which should post?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/employee-advocacy-and-personal-branding/personal-account-vs-company-page-which-should-post.md) - [How to get employees to share company posts](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/employee-advocacy-and-personal-branding/how-to-get-employees-to-share-company-posts.md) - [Should you write a social media policy for employees' personal accounts?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/employee-advocacy-and-personal-branding/should-you-write-a-social-media-policy-for-employees-personal-accounts.md) - [LinkedIn marketing strategy guide](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-platform-guides/linkedin-marketing-strategy-guide.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/employee-advocacy-and-personal-branding/what-is-employee-advocacy-on-social-media.
