# How to create a social media report > A social media report worth reading is short: what happened, what changed versus last period, & one clear recommendation. Longer reports get skimmed, not read. Updated: 2026-09-17. ## What a report actually needs - **The headline number**: the one metric this report is supposed to move, engagement rate, reach or click-through - **The comparison**: how that number changed versus last period, not just its current value - **A top performer**: one post that did well & a guess at why - **One recommendation**: what to actually change based on this period's data That's a complete report. Anything past those four sections is usually padding that makes a report look thorough without making it more useful. ## Why shorter reports get read & long ones don't A twelve-page report with every metric from every platform signals thoroughness but gets skimmed at best. The person reading it wants the headline & the recommendation, not the full data dump behind it. Keeping the raw data available for anyone who wants to dig in, while keeping the report itself to what fits on one screen, respects both audiences: the person who wants the summary & the person who wants to verify it. ## Structuring the comparison A number without a comparison point is close to meaningless. "Engagement rate was 1.2% this month" says almost nothing on its own. "Engagement rate was 1.2%, up from 0.9% last month" says something a reader can act on. Always report against the immediately previous period first, then against a longer baseline if it's genuinely different, since month-over-month is what most reports actually need. DunSocial's top-posts-by-impressions view is ordered so this month-over-month comparison is a glance rather than a manual side-by-side. ## How often to actually send one Weekly reporting usually produces more reports than there is real change to report on. Monthly is the more common & more sustainable rhythm for most accounts, with a lighter check-in whenever something notable happens outside that schedule. DunSocial's own reporting stays intentionally close to the data rather than trying to auto-generate a polished document: its analytics dashboard for X, Bluesky & Pinterest surfaces top posts by impressions & the engagement heatmap directly, which is the raw material a report gets built from rather than a report already assembled. ## Where the effort should actually go The report itself should take less effort to write than it took to gather the numbers behind it. If assembling the data is the hard part, that's the process worth fixing first, since a good report built from a slow, manual data pull rarely survives past the first quarter. Keeping analytics in the same place posts were scheduled, which is how DunSocial's calendar & dashboard sit together, removes the slowest part of that process: hunting the same numbers down across five separate platform dashboards before a report can even start. ## Related guides - [Social media analytics vs social media reporting](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-analytics/social-media-analytics-vs-social-media-reporting.md) - [How to measure social media engagement](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-analytics/how-to-measure-social-media-engagement.md) - [How often should you review social media analytics?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-analytics/how-often-should-you-review-social-media-analytics.md) - [Social media posting strategy](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-management/social-media-posting-strategy.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-analytics/how-to-create-a-social-media-report.
