# How to measure social media engagement
> Engagement rate is engagement actions, likes, comments & shares, divided by a base number, reach or followers, then turned into a percentage. Which base you use changes the result a lot, so staying consistent matters more than picking the "correct" one.

## The basic formula
Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares) ÷ base number × 100.
The formula itself is simple. The part that actually varies between tools & reports is which base number sits on the bottom.
## The two common bases
- **By reach**: engagement actions divided by how many accounts actually saw the post
- **By followers**: engagement actions divided by total follower count, regardless of who saw it
Engagement by reach is usually the more honest number, since it reflects people who actually saw the post rather than an entire follower list, most of whom a given post never reached.
Engagement by followers is easier to calculate & more commonly quoted, which is why industry benchmarks often use it even though it understates true engagement on accounts with lower reach relative to follower count.
## Why mixing the two ruins a comparison
Comparing an engagement-by-reach number from one post against an engagement-by-followers number from another produces a meaningless comparison, since the two percentages aren't measuring the same thing.
Picking one base & sticking with it across every post & every reporting period matters more than which specific base you pick.
## What to actually include as "engagement"
Different tools count different actions as engagement, some include saves & clicks, others count only likes, comments & shares. Reading a benchmark or a competitor's reported number without knowing which actions are counted is comparing incomplete information.
DunSocial keeps its own definition simple & visible on its analytics dashboard, so what counts as engagement in a top-posts-by-impressions view isn't hidden behind an unstated formula.
## Doing this without recalculating by hand
Manually pulling reach & engagement numbers from each platform, then recalculating by hand every week, is where most people give up on tracking this consistently.
DunSocial's analytics dashboard for X, Bluesky & Pinterest surfaces top posts by impressions directly, so the raw numbers a rate depends on are already pulled together rather than needing a separate export from each platform's own dashboard.
## Turning the number into a decision
A single post's engagement rate is noisy. What's actually useful is the trend across several posts on the same pillar or platform, since that's where a real pattern separates itself from normal week-to-week variation.
DunSocial's engagement heatmap tracks that pattern over time automatically & feeds it directly into its best-time-to-post suggestions, so the rate you calculate isn't just a number for a slide, it's the same input already shaping your schedule.
