# What is social media analytics?
> Social media analytics is the practice of collecting & reading the data behind your posts, reach, engagement, clicks, so decisions about what to post next are based on what actually happened rather than a guess.

## The short definition
Social media analytics is the data a platform generates around a post, likes, comments, shares, reach, clicks, turned into something a person can actually read & act on.
It's not the same as just glancing at a like count. A number by itself doesn't say whether a post did well for this specific account, compared to what, or why.
## What it's actually for
The point of tracking any of this isn't the number itself. It's the decision the number is supposed to change.
- Whether a content pillar is worth repeating or quietly dropping
- Whether a platform deserves more effort or less
- Whether a posting time or format is actually working
- Whether a change made last month helped or did nothing
Without analytics, all four of those get decided by gut feeling, which works until the gut feeling is wrong & nobody notices for months.
## Where the data actually comes from
Each platform exposes its own metrics through its own API, & the exact numbers available differ: X surfaces impressions & engagements, Instagram separates reach from impressions, LinkedIn reports differently again.
A tool reading this data is translating several different platforms' definitions into something comparable, which is harder than it sounds since "engagement" doesn't mean quite the same thing on every network. DunSocial pulls this directly from each connected platform's own API rather than asking anyone to check each network separately.
## Watching numbers vs using them
Plenty of dashboards show numbers without making it obvious what to do about them. A chart of impressions over time is interesting, but it doesn't answer "should I post more like this."
DunSocial keeps its own analytics narrow & practical rather than trying to cover everything at once: an analytics dashboard for X, Bluesky & Pinterest today, showing top posts by impressions, plus an engagement heatmap that also drives its best-time-to-post suggestions. The numbers exist to change what gets scheduled next, not just to be looked at.
## Where this fits with everything else
Analytics is the step that closes the loop on a posting strategy. A pillar, a cadence & a platform priority are all decisions made in advance, & analytics is what tells you afterward whether those decisions were right.
DunSocial's calendar keeps drafting, scheduling & this feedback loop in one place, so checking what performed doesn't mean leaving the tool where the posting actually happened.
