# What do social media analytics tools actually track? > Analytics tools mostly track three layers: raw numbers pulled from each platform API, rates computed from those numbers, & trend comparisons over time. What differs between tools is which platforms they cover & how deep each layer goes. Updated: 2026-09-17. ## The three layers under any analytics tool - **Raw data**: likes, comments, shares, reach, impressions, pulled directly from each platform's own API - **Computed metrics**: engagement rate, click-through rate & similar figures calculated from that raw data - **Trends**: the same metrics compared across time, this week versus last, this month versus last quarter Every analytics tool is doing some version of these three layers. What actually differs between them is platform coverage & how far the third layer goes. ## Where tools genuinely differ - **Platform coverage**: which networks a tool actually reports on, versus which ones it just lets you schedule to - **History depth**: how far back trend comparisons can reach - **Granularity**: whether a tool shows only account-level totals, or breaks results down by pillar, format or individual post - **Export**: whether the underlying numbers can leave the tool for a spreadsheet or a client-facing document A tool's marketing page rarely spells out exactly which of these it covers well, which is why checking a specific claim, like "analytics across all platforms," against what's actually shown in the product matters before relying on it. ## Being honest about what a tool doesn't do Every analytics tool has a boundary somewhere: a platform it doesn't cover yet, a history length it doesn't retain, a breakdown it doesn't offer. A tool that states that boundary plainly is more trustworthy than one implying it covers everything equally well. DunSocial's own boundary is stated the same way: its analytics dashboard currently covers X, Bluesky & Pinterest, with top posts by impressions & an engagement heatmap, while it publishes to 10 generally available networks in total. Reporting depth on the remaining networks is an area still being built out, not something already fully covered. ## What to actually check before picking a tool - Does it report on the specific platforms your account actually lives on, not just the ones it schedules to - Is the history long enough to compare against a real baseline, not just the last few days - Does the depth match what you'd actually use, an account total is fine for some, a per-pillar breakdown matters for others Matching a tool's actual analytics depth to what you'll genuinely use beats picking whichever one claims the broadest coverage on its pricing page. DunSocial's own pitch here is narrower on purpose: check whether X, Bluesky & Pinterest cover where your account actually lives before assuming broader coverage elsewhere would serve you better. ## Where narrower but honest coverage helps A tool that reports deeply on the two or three platforms an account actually posts to often serves that account better than one spreading thin coverage across ten networks nobody checks daily. DunSocial's dashboard is built on that trade-off deliberately, keeping its analytics scoped to where the engagement heatmap can meaningfully improve a schedule, rather than adding shallow coverage everywhere just to claim full breadth. ## Related guides - [What is social media analytics?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-analytics/what-is-social-media-analytics.md) - [How to track social media performance across multiple platforms](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-analytics/how-to-track-social-media-performance-across-platforms.md) - [What is a social media management tool?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-management/what-is-a-social-media-management-tool.md) - [How much does social media management cost?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-management/how-much-does-social-media-management-cost.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-analytics/what-social-media-analytics-tools-actually-track.
