# What social media metrics actually matter? > A handful of metrics actually change decisions: engagement rate, reach, click-through & follower growth over time. Most other numbers a platform surfaces are context for those four, not separate things to chase. Updated: 2026-09-17. ## The four that actually drive decisions - **Engagement rate**: likes, comments & shares relative to reach, the clearest single signal that content resonated - **Reach**: how many accounts actually saw the post, separate from how many follow you - **Click-through**: whether a post moved anyone to act, not just to look - **Follower growth**: the slow number, but the one that shows whether an account is compounding Everything else a platform reports, impressions, saves, video watch time, is mostly useful as context for these four, not a separate goal to chase on its own. ## Why raw counts mislead A post with 500 likes on an account with 50,000 followers did worse than a post with 500 likes on an account with 2,000 followers. The raw number says nothing without the account size behind it, which is exactly what engagement rate corrects for. The same problem applies to comparing platforms. A "good" number on LinkedIn & a "good" number on TikTok aren't the same number, since the platforms behave completely differently. ## Vanity metrics vs decision metrics A vanity metric feels good to report but rarely changes what happens next. Total lifetime followers is the classic example: it goes up slowly regardless of what you post this week, so it can't tell you whether this week's posts worked. A decision metric is one where a bad number this week should actually change next week's plan. Engagement rate on a specific pillar, or click-through on a specific link, both qualify. Total followers mostly doesn't. DunSocial's dashboard is built around decision metrics specifically, top posts by impressions & an engagement heatmap, rather than a running follower count that rarely changes what gets scheduled next. ## Matching metrics to what you're actually trying to do - Building awareness: reach & impressions matter most - Building a community: engagement rate & reply quality matter most - Driving traffic or sales: click-through matters most - Building long-term presence: follower growth, watched monthly, matters most Picking the metric that matches the actual goal first keeps a report from turning into twelve numbers nobody agreed mattered. DunSocial's dashboard leans into the first two of these deliberately, surfacing top posts by impressions & an engagement heatmap, since those are the numbers most accounts checking in weekly actually act on. ## Where DunSocial focuses its reporting Rather than trying to replicate every metric a platform's own dashboard exposes, DunSocial's analytics dashboard for X, Bluesky & Pinterest keeps to what's actually decision-worthy: which posts performed best by impressions, & when your specific audience engages. That heatmap doubles as the input for DunSocial's best-time-to-post suggestions, so the metric you're reading is the same one already shaping when your next post goes out. ## Related guides - [What is a good engagement rate on social media?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-analytics/what-is-a-good-engagement-rate-on-social-media.md) - [How to measure social media engagement](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-analytics/how-to-measure-social-media-engagement.md) - [Social media content pillars](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-management/social-media-content-pillars.md) - [Best time to post on social media](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-scheduler/best-time-to-post-on-social-media.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-analytics/what-social-media-metrics-actually-matter.
