# CLI vs API vs MCP: which one should you use for social media automation? > CLI fits a local terminal, script, or CI job. A REST API fits a custom backend integration. MCP fits an AI assistant that needs to reach your accounts from wherever it runs, without you building a custom integration for each one. Updated: 2026-09-24. ## The actual question underneath this choice All three, a CLI, a REST API, & MCP, ultimately do the same basic thing: let something other than a person clicking a button in the browser create, schedule, or publish a post. The real decision isn't which is more powerful, it's where the automation actually runs & who or what is driving it. ## When a CLI fits A CLI fits a local terminal, a shell script, or a CI job, anywhere there's a filesystem & a command to run. It's fast to set up & leans on tooling that already exists in that environment. The trade-off is that a CLI is thin: it works well for one script or one machine, but it doesn't generalise to a mobile app, a web dashboard, or a hosted service that has no shell to run commands in. ## When a REST API fits A REST API fits a custom backend: your own service calling DunSocial's endpoints directly as part of a larger application you're building, a dashboard, an internal tool, a workflow engine. It gives full control over exactly what gets called & when, at the cost of writing & maintaining the integration code yourself. ## When MCP fits MCP fits an AI assistant, Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or another compatible client, that needs to reach your social accounts without a custom integration built specifically for that one assistant. The protocol standardises auth, discovery & the available actions in one place, so one hosted MCP server can be reached by any compatible client, rather than building a separate integration per AI tool. DunSocial's own MCP server is exactly this kind of single, reusable connection: one setup step, then every compatible client reaches it the same way. ## A practical way to decide - Automating from a script, a cron job, or CI, without an AI assistant involved: use the CLI - Building your own application or backend service around posting: use the API directly - Letting an AI assistant, in whatever client someone actually uses, draft & schedule posts: use MCP These aren't mutually exclusive. A team might use the CLI for a release-notes-to-social pipeline in CI while also connecting Claude via MCP for day-to-day drafting help, since each fits a different part of the same overall workflow. All three paths into DunSocial reach the same underlying workspace, so mixing them doesn't mean juggling separate systems. ## Where DunSocial supports each path DunSocial exposes all three directly: a hosted MCP server with 53 tools for Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor & other compatible clients, a CLI (`dun` / `dunsocial` on npm) built for local terminals, coding agents & CI, & a REST API underneath both that a custom integration can call directly. All three ultimately reach the same workspace, the same calendar, & the same review step before anything actually publishes. ## Starting with the simplest option that fits Reaching for MCP because it sounds like the most capable option, when the actual need is a single CI script publishing a release announcement, adds complexity a CLI call would have handled directly. Matching the tool to the actual automation, rather than to whichever sounds most advanced, keeps the integration simpler to maintain later. DunSocial's own docs draw this same line explicitly across its CLI, API & MCP surfaces, rather than pushing every integration toward the most advanced option by default. ## Related guides - [What is MCP & why does it matter for social media?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/what-is-mcp-and-why-does-it-matter-for-social-media.md) - [How to schedule social media posts from the command line](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/how-to-schedule-social-media-posts-from-the-command-line.md) - [What can you automate with a social media API?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/what-can-you-automate-with-a-social-media-api.md) - [Can AI schedule social media posts?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-scheduler/can-ai-schedule-social-media-posts.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/cli-vs-api-vs-mcp-which-one-should-you-use.
