# How to automate social media posting in a CI/CD pipeline > A CI job can call a social media CLI or API directly after a successful deploy, using a personal access token stored as a secret, to post a release announcement without anyone manually copying release notes into a composer. Updated: 2026-09-24. ## Why this is a genuinely good CI use case A release announcement is one of the more mechanical posts a team writes: the actual content, what changed, is already sitting in release notes or a changelog, & the timing is naturally tied to the deploy itself finishing successfully. That combination, existing content plus an event-driven trigger, is exactly what CI automation is good at handling without a person in the loop for the mechanical part. ## The basic pipeline shape 1. A deploy step finishes successfully 2. The pipeline pulls the relevant release notes or changelog entry 3. A CLI or API call formats & schedules a post from that content 4. The post lands on the team's shared calendar, tagged as coming from CI The actual posting step is usually a single command or API call once the content & credentials are in place, added as one more step in a pipeline that's likely already doing several other things after a successful deploy. ## Authenticating from CI specifically A CI environment can't click through an interactive login, which is exactly what a personal access token is for: stored as a CI secret, never printed in logs, & scoped to the specific workspace the automation should post from. Treating that token with the same care as any other production secret in the pipeline, never echoed to build output, rotated if a run ever leaks it, is a real requirement, not a nice-to-have. ## Deciding what actually gets posted automatically Not every deploy deserves an announcement. A patch fixing a small bug rarely needs the same treatment as a genuine feature release, & posting on every single deploy quickly trains an audience to tune the account out. Gating the automation on a specific signal, a version bump that matches a release convention, or a specific label on the deploy, keeps the automated posts meaningful rather than constant noise. A pipeline calling DunSocial's CLI conditionally, only on that signal, is a small addition to a deploy script rather than a separate system to maintain. ## Where review still fits in an automated pipeline Automating the mechanical steps doesn't mean removing review entirely. Scheduling the post for a short delay after it's created, rather than publishing immediately the moment CI runs, gives a person a window to catch a typo or a wrong claim in the auto-generated content before it goes live, without losing the actual automation benefit. DunSocial's CLI & API support this directly: a CI job can schedule a post rather than force an immediate publish, so it lands on the calendar with time to review before it actually goes out, same as anything drafted by a person. ## A realistic starting point Starting with a single, well-defined trigger, a tagged release on the main branch, posting to one platform, proves the pattern works before expanding to more triggers or more platforms. Automating everything at once, across every platform & every kind of deploy, before the basic pattern has been tested, is where this kind of pipeline tends to produce its first embarrassing mistake. DunSocial's calendar makes that first mistake easy to catch early too, since even an automated post still sits there for review before it publishes. ## Related guides - [How to schedule social media posts from the command line](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/how-to-schedule-social-media-posts-from-the-command-line.md) - [What is a personal access token & how does it secure API access?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/what-is-a-personal-access-token-and-how-does-it-secure-api-access.md) - [What are webhooks for social media posting?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/what-are-webhooks-for-social-media-posting.md) - [How to batch create social media content](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-content-creation/how-to-batch-create-social-media-content.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/how-to-automate-social-media-posting-in-a-ci-cd-pipeline.
