# What is MCP & why does it matter for social media? > MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way for an AI assistant to discover & call a service's actions, auth included, rather than each AI client needing its own custom integration. For social media, that means one connection lets an assistant draft, schedule & publish, wherever that assistant runs. Updated: 2026-09-24. ## The problem MCP actually solves Before a shared standard existed, connecting an AI assistant to an external service meant building a custom integration for each specific assistant: one for Claude, a different one for ChatGPT, another for whatever came next. That doesn't scale past a couple of integrations, & it means every new AI client requires new integration work from scratch. MCP standardises this: a service exposes its actions, its auth flow, & a description of what each action does, through one protocol. Any MCP-compatible client can then discover & call those actions the same way, without a bespoke integration per client. ## What that looks like in practice An MCP server is reachable at a single endpoint. A compatible AI client connects to it, discovers what actions are available, drafting a post, scheduling one, listing recent posts, & calls them directly, with the underlying auth handled the same way regardless of which client is asking. This is different from a plain API call in one important way: the actions are described richly enough, in plain language, that an AI model can reason about which one to use for a given request, rather than a developer having to hand-write that logic for every possible request shape. ## Why this matters specifically for social media Social media posting involves several small but real details: platform-specific formatting, media handling, scheduling versus immediate publishing, per-platform metadata like a subreddit or a Discord channel. Exposing all of that through MCP means an AI assistant can handle a request like "schedule this for tomorrow morning across X & LinkedIn" by calling the right sequence of actions, rather than a person manually translating that request into several separate manual steps. DunSocial's own MCP tools cover exactly this range of detail, so an assistant calling them is working with the same platform-specific fields the web composer handles. ## What DunSocial exposes through MCP DunSocial runs a hosted MCP server with 53 tools covering drafting, scheduling, publishing, media handling & workspace management, reachable by Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor & other compatible clients. A `validate_post` tool runs a dry-run check before anything actually schedules or publishes, catching an issue while there's still time to fix it rather than after a post has already gone out wrong. ## What MCP doesn't do on its own MCP standardises how an assistant reaches a service. It doesn't decide what the assistant should actually do with that access, whether a draft is good, whether a time is appropriate, whether the assistant should be trusted to publish without review. Those decisions still belong to whoever sets up & reviews the integration, not to the protocol itself. DunSocial keeps drafting & publishing as separate steps for MCP-originated posts the same way it does for anything drafted in the browser, so a post an assistant schedules through MCP still sits on the calendar for review before it goes out, rather than skipping that check just because the request came from an AI client instead of a person typing in the composer. ## Related guides - [CLI vs API vs MCP: which one should you use?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/cli-vs-api-vs-mcp-which-one-should-you-use.md) - [Can ChatGPT or Claude post directly to social media?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/can-chatgpt-or-claude-post-directly-to-social-media.md) - [How to connect an AI agent to your social media accounts safely](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/how-to-connect-an-ai-agent-to-your-social-media-accounts-safely.md) - [How AI can help with social media management](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-management/how-ai-helps-with-social-media-management.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/what-is-mcp-and-why-does-it-matter-for-social-media.
