# How to calculate the time cost of social media > Track hours by task for two weeks, multiply by an honest hourly value & you'll see the true monthly cost. Most of the time goes on switching between tools & rewriting, which is where savings are easiest to find. Updated: 2026-10-05. ## Why time is the biggest cost For most small teams, social media money goes on people, not tools. A person spending six hours a week on posting is a real cost, even if no invoice arrives. Counting it properly changes how you judge everything else, including whether a paid tool is worth it. ## Track it for two weeks Write down time against a few categories, as you go: - Planning & ideas - Writing & designing - Scheduling & publishing - Replying & checking - Reporting Estimates from memory are usually too low. A quick note each time you switch task is enough. ## Put a value on an hour Use what the work would cost to hire or what that person's time earns elsewhere. Be honest: a founder's hour is worth more than an intern's. Multiply hours by that value to get a monthly figure. That's the true cost of your current process. ## Find where the hours go Most of the time is rarely in the creative part. It's switching between apps, copying captions into each platform, resizing, re-uploading & checking that things published. Those tasks are the easiest to cut, because they're mechanical. DunSocial is built around exactly those tasks, which is why it's worth measuring them first. ## Where DunSocial can reduce it DunSocial targets the mechanical categories: write once, adapt per platform, schedule to all of them & see the result on one calendar. That's mostly the scheduling & publishing line, plus some of the drafting. It won't reduce planning, replying or reporting much. DunSocial has no inbox, so reply time stays the same. ## Re-measure after a change Run the same two-week tracking after changing your process or tool. If scheduling & publishing dropped from three hours to one, that's two hours a week recovered. DunSocial's 14-day trial is long enough to run that comparison before paying anything. ## Related guides - [How to set a social media budget](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-budgeting-and-roi/how-to-set-a-social-media-budget.md) - [Social media scheduler vs posting manually](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-scheduler/social-media-scheduler-vs-posting-manually.md) - [How to batch create social media content](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-content-creation/how-to-batch-create-social-media-content.md) - [Is a social media management tool worth the money?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-budgeting-and-roi/is-a-social-media-management-tool-worth-the-money.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-budgeting-and-roi/how-to-calculate-the-time-cost-of-social-media.
