# How to respond to comments on social media > Reply to genuine questions & thoughtful comments quickly, keep a warm & specific tone, & don't feel obliged to answer every reaction. A short, human reply usually beats a polished, templated one. Updated: 2026-10-05. ## Not every comment needs a reply Prioritise questions, thoughtful points & people who've clearly engaged. A simple emoji or "great post" can be liked rather than answered. Replying to everything dilutes your time. Replying to the right comments builds relationships. ## Keep the tone human Write like a person, not a help-desk script. Use the commenter's name where the platform shows it, answer the specific thing they said & avoid canned lines that could apply to anyone. A short, specific answer beats a long polished one. People notice when a reply reads like a template. ## Add something with each reply A good reply moves the conversation on: an extra detail, a link to something useful, a question back. That gives other readers a reason to join in as well. Replies from the post's author often signal to a platform that the thread is active, though how that affects reach changes over time & shouldn't be the reason you reply. ## Match the platform Short & casual works on X, Threads & Bluesky. LinkedIn comments can be a little longer & more considered. On Instagram, a warm line plus an emoji suits the tone. Reddit is different again: replies should add value & follow the community's rules, or they'll be removed. DunSocial can publish posts to Reddit, but the replies underneath them are written & posted on Reddit itself. ## Where DunSocial fits DunSocial doesn't have an inbox, so you reply on each platform. What it does is take posting off your plate so you can set aside time for this. Its calendar shows when posts go live, so you can plan to be around for the first hour after a post publishes, when most replies arrive. ## Use drafts for tricky replies For sensitive threads, write the reply somewhere private first, read it again & check it with a colleague if it matters. Speed is less important than not making things worse. DunSocial's approval step is for scheduled posts, not for replies on the platform, so have a simple agreement about who can respond to what, & when to hand off. ## Related guides - [How quickly should you reply to social media messages?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-community-and-reputation-management/how-quickly-should-you-reply-to-social-media-messages.md) - [How to handle negative comments on social media](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-community-and-reputation-management/how-to-handle-negative-comments-on-social-media.md) - [How to write captions that get engagement](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-content-creation/how-to-write-captions-that-get-engagement.md) - [How to measure social media engagement](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-analytics/how-to-measure-social-media-engagement.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-community-and-reputation-management/how-to-respond-to-comments-on-social-media.
