# What is social media community management? > Community management is the two-way side of social media: replying to people, moderating conversations & building relationships. Publishing is one half of the job; being present afterwards is the other. Updated: 2026-10-05. ## The two halves of social media Publishing is one-way: you put something out. Community management is the other direction: people respond, ask questions, disagree or share their own experience, & someone answers. Brands that only publish tend to feel like noise. Brands that reply feel like someone's there. ## What the work includes - Replying to comments & direct messages - Moderating spam, abuse & off-topic threads - Watching for mentions of the brand elsewhere - Welcoming new followers & members - Passing feedback & bug reports to the right team None of it needs special tools to start. It needs regular attention & clear rules about tone. ## How it differs from content management Content management plans, writes & schedules posts. Community management reacts to what happens after they go live, so it can't be fully planned in advance. That's why the two often suffer from different problems. Content slips when no one has time to write; community slips when no one has time to read. ## Who should do it In a very small business it's usually the same person who posts. As volume grows it may split, with one person creating & another handling conversations. Whoever does it needs enough context to answer accurately & enough authority to escalate when something needs a decision. DunSocial's roles reflect that split: members create content, while admins manage connected accounts & billing. ## What DunSocial covers DunSocial handles the publishing side: drafting, scheduling & posting across connected platforms. It frees the time that community work needs. It has no social inbox, so replies, direct messages & mentions are handled on each platform itself. That's a real limit, & it's better to know it up front when planning who answers what. ## Making room for both Schedule the week's posts in one sitting, then block a few short slots each day for replies. Doing both in the same window means neither gets done well. DunSocial's calendar helps by showing when posts go out, so a team can be available to reply when a post is most likely to draw responses. ## Keeping it sustainable Decide how fast you'll respond & on which platforms. A promise to answer everything within an hour is hard to keep; a clear daily check is not. DunSocial can't reply for you & shouldn't pretend to. Its role is to make the posting reliable so that the time you spend on people is spent well. ## Related guides - [How to respond to comments on social media](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-community-and-reputation-management/how-to-respond-to-comments-on-social-media.md) - [How to build an engaged social media community](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-community-and-reputation-management/how-to-build-an-engaged-social-media-community.md) - [What does a social media manager do?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-management/what-does-a-social-media-manager-do.md) - [Social media management vs scheduling](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-management/social-media-management-vs-scheduling.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-community-and-reputation-management/what-is-social-media-community-management.
