# What data does a social media tool actually need access to? > To publish for you, a tool needs a connection to each account that lets it post on your behalf, & nothing like your password. It should store that connection securely, & you should be able to see & revoke it. Updated: 2026-10-05. ## What the connection actually is When you connect an account to a scheduling tool, you normally sign in through the platform's own login screen & approve a specific set of permissions. The platform then hands the tool a token, a limited credential that lets it do those specific things. The tool never sees your password. That is the main difference between a proper connection & the old habit of sharing a login. ## What a tool reasonably needs - Permission to publish posts to the account - Permission to read basic account details, such as the name & handle, to show which account is which - On some platforms, permission to read post performance, if the tool offers analytics - The ability to refresh the connection so it keeps working without constant re-login Permissions beyond those, such as reading private messages or managing followers, aren't needed for scheduling & are worth questioning if requested. ## What to check before connecting - What permissions the platform's approval screen actually lists - Whether the tool says how it stores the connection - Whether you can disconnect an account yourself & revoke access from the platform's side too - Who in your team can connect or remove accounts The platform's approval screen is the most honest summary of what a tool can do. Reading it takes thirty seconds & is the best habit in this whole area. ## How the connection should be stored A token is as sensitive as a password for the permissions it grants, so it shouldn't sit in plain text. Good practice is encrypting it before storage & limiting which systems can read it. DunSocial encrypts the OAuth tokens for connected accounts with AES-256-GCM before storing them, & refreshes them on a schedule per platform so connections keep working without anyone re-entering credentials. ## Who inside the team can touch it Access to a connected account is also an internal question. If every member can disconnect or reconnect accounts, one mistake can interrupt posting for everyone. DunSocial limits managing social account connections to owners & admins, while members create content using the accounts already connected. Keeping that boundary means day-to-day posting doesn't require handing out the ability to change what is connected. ## Reviewing connections periodically People leave, platforms change & old integrations linger. A quarterly look at which accounts are connected, who has access & which automations hold tokens is cheap & catches forgotten access. A DunSocial workspace shows its connected accounts in one place, so that review is a single page to read rather than a hunt across several tools. Revoking an old connection is then a deliberate, visible action. ## Related guides - [How to connect an AI agent to your social media accounts safely](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/how-to-connect-an-ai-agent-to-your-social-media-accounts-safely.md) - [What is a personal access token & how does it secure API access?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-automation-for-developers/what-is-a-personal-access-token-and-how-does-it-secure-api-access.md) - [Social media roles & permissions explained](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-for-teams-and-agencies/social-media-roles-and-permissions-explained.md) - [What is a social media management tool?](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-management/what-is-a-social-media-management-tool.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-compliance-and-brand-safety/what-data-does-a-social-media-tool-actually-need-access-to.
