# How long should a social media post be? > There is no single right length. LinkedIn tolerates a longer, considered caption than X's faster scroll, & the right length is the shortest one that still carries the idea completely, on every platform. Updated: 2026-09-24. ## Why "how long" doesn't have one answer Reading context differs enormously by platform. Someone on LinkedIn during a work break reads differently than someone flicking through X between other things, so a length that feels considered on one can feel padded on the other. The honest answer is that length should follow the idea & the platform, not a fixed target word count applied everywhere. ## A rough starting range per platform - **X**: short, often a single sharp thought or a tight thread of them - **LinkedIn**: tolerates several short paragraphs, especially for a genuinely useful idea - **Instagram**: a punchy first line matters most, the rest can run longer if it earns the read - **Threads & Bluesky**: closer to X's brevity, though slightly more relaxed These are starting ranges, not hard limits. A genuinely great idea earns more length than a mediocre one on any platform. ## The actual test for length The right length is the shortest version that still carries the idea completely. Cutting past that point starts removing meaning, not padding. Adding past that point starts adding padding, not meaning. Reading a draft back & removing any sentence that doesn't change what a reader takes away is a reliable way to find that line, regardless of platform. ## Why longer isn't automatically more thorough A long caption feels thorough but often just repeats the same point in different words. A short caption that says one thing clearly usually communicates more, since nothing competes with it for the reader's attention. The instinct to add more, out of a sense that longer looks more effortful, is worth resisting deliberately, especially on platforms built for a fast scroll. DunSocial's per-platform previews make this visible before publishing, showing roughly how a caption actually reads on the destination platform rather than as a wall of text in a generic text box. ## Adjusting length when repurposing The same idea reshaped for a different platform often needs to change length substantially, not just phrasing. A full explanation that works on LinkedIn usually needs real cutting, not just trimming, to work as a single X post. DunSocial's composer handles this reshaping directly: drafting once & adapting per platform means the length adjustment happens as part of that reshape, rather than a separate manual pass counting characters for each version. ## When length genuinely doesn't matter If an idea is specific & the reader is likely to want the full context, a longer caption that stays focused will outperform a short one that leaves out something that actually mattered. Length is a tool serving the idea, not a target to hit for its own sake, which is why DunSocial's composer never enforces a length beyond what the destination platform itself requires. ## Related guides - [How to write captions that get engagement](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-content-creation/how-to-write-captions-that-get-engagement.md) - [How to repurpose one piece of content across platforms](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-content-creation/how-to-repurpose-one-piece-of-content-across-platforms.md) - [How to write a social media hook](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-content-creation/how-to-write-a-social-media-hook.md) - [Social media scheduler for multiple platforms](https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-scheduler/social-media-scheduler-for-multiple-platforms.md) ## About this document This is the Markdown representation of https://www.dunsocial.com/hub/social-media-content-creation/how-long-should-a-social-media-post-be.
