# How to write a social media hook

> A hook is the first line, the job is stopping a scroll, not summarising the post. It works by promising something specific: an answer, a number, a contradiction, then makes the reader want the next line to get it.

## What a hook is actually for

A hook's only job is earning the next line. It isn't a summary of the post & it isn't the thesis statement, it's the thing that makes scrolling past feel like missing out on something.

Most feeds show a line or two before a reader decides whether to stop. Whatever fits in that space is doing all of the work, regardless of how good the rest of the post is.

## Patterns that reliably work

- **The specific number**: "3 things", "in 90 seconds", a number reads as concrete where a vague claim doesn't
- **The contradiction**: stating something that goes against common assumption, then explaining
- **The direct question**: one the reader actually has, not a rhetorical one
- **The unfinished thought**: a line that only makes sense once the next one lands

These work because each one creates a small, specific gap the reader wants closed, rather than delivering the whole idea up front.

## What actually kills a hook

- Starting with context or background before the point
- A generic opener like "let's talk about" or "here's why"
- Restating the topic instead of making a claim about it
- Being too long to read in the half-second before someone scrolls past
