# How to schedule social media posts

## What scheduling actually does

Scheduling queues a finished post to publish at a specific future time, without anyone needing to be online or click publish manually when that time arrives.

It sounds simple because the mechanism is simple. Most of the actual decisions happen before scheduling: is the post ready, is it right for the platform & is the time actually a good one.

## Check the post before you check the time

- Does it read correctly for this specific platform, not just in general
- Is any image or video attached, sized correctly & actually necessary
- Would it still make sense if it published a day later than planned
- Has someone reviewed it, even a quick pass

Scheduling a post that is not ready just delays the problem instead of fixing it.

## Picking a posting time

Generic advice, post at 9am on Tuesdays, ignores that every audience is different.

The more reliable approach uses your own account's past engagement to suggest a time, rather than an industry-wide average that may not apply to your followers at all.
