# How far in advance can you schedule social media posts?

> How far ahead you can schedule a post is usually limited by the destination platform, not the scheduling tool itself, so the honest answer depends on which network the post is going to.

## Two different limits

There are actually two separate limits here, & they get mixed up.

The scheduling tool itself rarely enforces a strict cap on how far ahead you can queue a post. The platform you're publishing to sometimes does, through its own API rules on how long an access token or a scheduled action stays valid.

## Why the platform matters more

A scheduler is a middleman. If the destination platform's API doesn't support scheduling that far out, or its own token expires before the publish time arrives, the post can't reliably go out no matter what the scheduling tool allows you to set.

This is one reason a failed scheduled post is sometimes a platform-side issue rather than a scheduler bug: the queue held the post correctly, but the destination refused it at publish time.

## What's actually reasonable

For most accounts, scheduling a few weeks to a couple of months ahead is common & reliable. Scheduling a year out is technically possible in many tools but riskier: platform rules change, campaigns shift, & a post written that far in advance is more likely to go stale before it publishes.

## A practical approach
